Thank you to everyone who entered the contest. We were blown away by the overwhelming response. The photos were awesome, the total number of votes cast was off the charts, and the support each group received from their constituencies was just plain inspiring.
We originally offered to refund the purchase price of the winner's garments up to $500. But after seeing the results and having to agree on a winner, our group of judges couldn't choose just one. They insisted that the award package be expanded to include an additional $500 worth of prize money to be divided among three runners up.
So here they are, the four winning entries of the "Edge of Summer" photo contest as chosen by popular vote and a jury of experts from The Graphic Edge. Thanks again to everyone who participated and congratulations!
The Southeast Iowa 10U Xplosion Softball Team went the extra mile with professional photography at a unique setting. They also did a great job of mobilizing their supporters who provided 220 votes - nearly 100 more than the next closest submission.
We also heard from a number of Xplosion fans about the commitment these young women show to their sport, their team, and each other.
Congratulations, Xplosion - you truly blew this contest up!
The Blackduck Drakes Women's Volleyball Team from Blackduck, MN made quite an impression with their interpretation of the "Edge of Summer" theme (the only themed photo submitted, by the way). And what says summer in Minnesota better than shorts with fur hats and snowmobiles on green grass?
The deciding factor, though was the sheer number of Blackduck fans who blew up our Facebook feed during the "comment round" with an outpouring of support for their hometown volleyballers. It was enough to convince our judges that the Drakes deserved 1st Runner Up status. Nicely done, ladies!
The Prairie View High School Theater cast of "The Diviners" put on quite a show with over 100 votes during the submission phase and a huge ovation of support during the comment round. This was one of only two non-sports related submissions we received and the only submission from an arts program. The authentic and heartfelt comments left by supporters really demonstrate how much a program like this means to the students, educators, and parents. Our judges were moved to declare this an "award winning performance" and present 2nd Runner Up honors to "The Diviners."
Team spirit with a touch of swag combine for a great photo of the Charles City High School Volleyball Team. It was enough to make them part of the exclusive group of only 4 contestants that garnered over 100 votes. That was enough to convince our judges to include them in our expanded prize offerings. Well done, Comets!
