Iowa’s best girls high school volleyball players are heading to Carroll, IA this weekend to compete in the 2017 Iowa High School Senior All-Star Weekend. This annual event features two games between four teams. (Click the image at right to see the complete program.)
Players are selected by a committee of IGCA coaches after being nominated by their own coaches based on their career and season performance. The coaches for each of the four teams go through a similar nomination and selection process.
Once the list of players is finalized, the girls are placed on team rosters named after the mascots of Iowa’s three public universities plus the Drake Bulldogs.
Although there are no trophies or titles to be won during this all-start weekend, Keith Stickrod, Kuemper High School volleyball coach and one of the event organizers, says the competition is still quite intense. “Of course, the coaches all want to win, and it doesn’t take long before the girls get a feel for each other and then it’s game on!”
Competitive spirit notwithstanding, one annual phenomenon that Stickrod says he enjoys seeing is how rivalries that can be several years old breakdown pretty quickly when the girls find themselves on the same team. “It happens every year,” he said. “They start playing together and realize, ‘hey, I don’t hate this girl as much as I thought I did!’”
Players to watch include local favorite Kalee Peter, a Kuemper High School middle blocker/outside hitter, and Sydney Peterson, a standout libero from Dike-New Peterson High School who has commited to play volleyball at University of Texas.
